Many of you have helped answer many questions on how many sunfish to put in a 90 gal with cover, good filtration and with dithers in this case creek chubs and a flat bullhead, I'm trying to have a so called species tank with some companions, but I am still struggling with the title I used, all male Longears (central) or not? and how many? or few male Longears and a few males of some other sunfish of course which ones? But I also do not want a war zone but I can't get away from the color of the Longears.

So yes or no? if most say no then I will go with 2 males and 3 to 4 females if that is better. Or just wait and find some O-spots and mix with Bantams change the bullhead to a madtom etc.

If you're not necessarily trying to breed them then I don't see why you can't go with all males. My experience with them is limited to the tank I have now but I don't see why you would necessarily need females in there. You'll need plenty of structure for territories regardless so I don't see why the mix is that important.

Hmmmn, that's a good question, I believe its really gonna depend on how many fish you want in the tank, and structure; I personally like having a couple males and a lot of females so that the males can color up in the spring and start making nests and doing courtship dances.....but that's just my preference, I do believe that with just males of one species you will have to give them room to set up territories and that will mean you will have to have less fish in the tank.

I've been thinking about this for a bit. Really, the fish that you want to see are the dominant males, but they really need other fish to dominate over and females bring out the color and attitude better than males would. If you get all males you'll still have only a couple of them get to that bigger size, the rest will grow slower and not have that same size.
