All male Longears (central) in a 90 gal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ralph ....... how many longears did you end up getting for your 90?

I tried an all male longear set up in a 125 in the past. Basically what I discovered is that a single dominant male required approx 2ft of the tank, so in a 6 ft tank best case scenario was 3 dom males, or 2, with the one in the middle getting harrased from either side. The rest of the smaller males got pushed around by the other 2 or 3 dom fish. I even had pseudo displaying and breeding take place within the group of 12 males. (I actually thought that a few sub dom males, were females) I had a lot of cover, line of sight breaks, etc, and in the end I wasn't happy with my choice of all males. Later on down the road I ended up selling the fish and doing something different with that tank. In hindsight I wish that I had gone with 2 males, and several females.

I hope that you have better luck with yours.

warmouth,

He or she found a spot in the back between 2 large rocks to hide, I never see it eat or swim around or anything else, if I want to see it I have to use a flashlight, maybe someday.......

Im not sure about Flat Bullheads but the Stonecats I used to have when they were small would only come out at night, or move under the log during the day....try sinking pellets at night where the rocks are at...when he gets bigger Im sure hell come out more.

I think it is about time for an update, I will post some pics later. At this time I have 3 male Longears left 2 are around 4 inches and 1 is about 3 inches they have grown out well with nice colors, the other 3 had some issues 1 died about 4 months ago he or she was smaller but in good health until one day I found it stuck to the filter overflow, the other 2 were eaten by the now removed flathead bullhead which grow way too fast. As for the 4 creek chubs, 2 jumped out and the other 2 while they grow out nicely they were eaten by the bullhead from what I could tell, no trace of them were ever found.

That’s it, the 3 Longears are doing great they chase each other a little but only when feeding time comes, but they all get more than enough to eat. I need to out in some type of bottom feeder but no cats or bullheads any suggestions?
