all male tank?? awesome, or mistank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
love my tank, and my mixture. I am definately not a follow, i set my own rules and i try to make the impossible happen. heck my red peacock chases my venustus around all the time. it is a crazy lil world in there.

i think the key was, i got them all at the same time, and all as babies.

Well good for you. It's not us being "purists" it's us wanting what's best for these fish. The funny thing about cichlids is things can be fine for a while then the killing will start. Getting them at the same time as babies makes no difference. Once maturity hits you may have trouble on your hands.
I did the same thing as you once. I bought a whole bunch of different mbuna and stuck them together. they did well for a while but once maturity hit it was a war zone. It was horrible to watch. They were constantly fighting. Once I stocked the tank better things were way more peaceful. I would much rather have a nice set up I KNEW would work out.
Yes there will be those out there that it works for but more often than not it doesn't work. Break all the "rules" you want, it doesn't make you cool. It's just sad that your fish may end up suffering because of it.
Also your yellow fin does have a lot of female qualities. The only way to know for sure is to vent it.

Hello,

I also have a similar question. I have 3 cichlids in my biocube 29. They are doing great so far; however, I am planning on upgrading to 55 gallons. I wonder if this time I can get some help from you to know what kind of cichlids I can mix in the same tank. I have read something about overcrowding. Not sure though if there is something I want to do. I definitely want to do all male tank. I have one 4inch labidochromis caeruleus, one 3inch electric blue alhi, and one 2 inch red peacock. (All males) I would like to keep the same colors... Yellow, blue and red. I also want to have demasoni if possible. I know they are pretty aggressive. I have read that you should have at least 12... I have seen tank with just a few. Can you help to get the perfect set up for my new 55 gallon tank? thanks!
