i was thinking of getting rid of the bio rings and the carbon and just putting another sponge in there (if it will fit )

i have a 30g w/d on the tank (190 gal) so im not worried about bio

and i have two 110's on top

has any one done this before,
does it work well

I have. but two 110 sponges doesn't fit (too high when stacked) so I had to trim one a bit.

i dont run ac's but will the second sponge really help in this situation? or slow the flow?shouldnt the one be catchin most particulates before they get to the rest of the media?

This is the second time i've seen a post of someone wanting to do this.. I guess I just don't understand the point.

I did it on an AC70. It had no effect as the bottom gets dirty and the top stays clean.

I think the point is that the flow is strong enough that they make excellent mechanical only filters (as any high gph filter would). I'd just use one sponge though and rinse it out once a week instead of trying to stack double sponges. More than one sponge would cut down on the water flow/gph. Even just the one sponge will still work great for bio media anyway so you'd have the best of both worlds.

Well yea, you still have to syphon the bottom just as thoroughly. There's not a filter out there that can take care of that for us.

You could put filter floss in there instead of another sponge. That should filter out finer particles.

Oops, I see now I was trying to envision how the top of the water level could be clean and the bottom dirty lol!

This is what i do and it works great. And I still use the rings (it helps hold down the floss.
