I have a 75 gallon tank with two Penguin 350s. Eventually both filters started making this wretched noise after having them on the tank for a couple months. I tried to vaseline the impellet that never fixed anything. The only fix has been to pull up on the intake tube out of the electric impeller insert to get the noise to stop but eventually it falls back down to due to gravity and starts making the noise. I have the same filter on my 55 gallon which has never had a single issue but for some reason the two on my 75 are making the noise. Ive been getting so sick of it so earlier this week i went and bought an Aqueon 75 and put it on the tank. Everything was working great that night then the next day i wake up and it isnt even working. It was plugged in, making zero noise and not operating at all, while every other filter/light/heater on my tank was working fine. Everything is in the same outlet/protector. Even the penguins were working.

At this point I returned it to the store and came back with another thinking it was just a bad egg, and i had a gift card so i got another one because i want a lot of filtration since its a 75 with 2 Oscars. So now i have Two Penguin 350s and two Aqueon 75s on my tank. Everything was working fine i left my house for 2-3 hours and i come home to see neither aqueon working, and now one of my penguins not working, its on making an electric noise but not sucking any water at all. The aqueons are plugged in not making a peep, no electric movement or noise whatsoever like they arent plugged at all. And last but not least the other penguin (the only filter working at this point) has begun making that annoying impeller noise again. The light, heater, and aerator are all working normally. I checked the outlet for every piece individually and the outlet seems to be working fine its just the filters not working. So im gonna have to return both of my brand new aqueons i bought today that arent working? Im 0/3 on them working for more than 24 hours. Ive never had any other problems with smaller models of the Aqueons. I dont know what to do now.

I personally had the same issue with a new marineland filter so what I did was place a wad of floss between the intake where it bends so that the tube didn't go down flush. I have been using the filter ever since with no annoying noise from the impeller.

Sounds like you have some kind of fine sand that's getting into all of your filters.

Beyond that I would recommend a higher quality filter. Only HOBs i know of that will handle large waste producers like oscars are the aquaclear 70 or 110. They command a bit steeper price than the aqueons or Marineland, but I would take one ac110 over 3 penguin 350s any day.

I guess but that wouldnt make sense because I have the same sand in my other 55 tank which also has the Penguin 350 and it has never had the problems im having with this 75gal.

Try the floss or even a couple of cotton balls and let me know if that helps.

Where are you putting the floss/cotton? Can i see a picture maybe? Im considering dumping the penguin altogether once i get an AC110 and get its bacteria established
