So recently I've decided to get back into breeding hybrids in a big way. I wasn't sure what I wanted, I just knew I wanted mainly pure breds. I ordered six 4 1/2"-5" synspila "Belize", 2 males and 4 females, from Dan at Cichlids of the Americas. The smaller, more colorful syn male, instantly bonded with my blood parrot, the two largest syns were already pair bonded, leaving me 3 extra females. Today I found a large male jag and female jack dempsey at my lfs, I brought them home and it was another case of love at first sight. After having seen what their fry might look like in the big hybrid example thread, I'm very excited about this pairing. To make room for them, I placed my 3 extra syn girls in with a carpintis x cyanguttatus male half their size. Not only is he not afraid of them in the least, but they keep showing interest in him! Showing off, pecking at each other to let him see which is more dominant, flashing their best colors etc, wth? Of course I have too many fish, anyone interested in a sexed synspila pair can pm me for details. I'm still really not sure where I'm going with this strain, I've got several ideas bouncing around but no real plan yet. It won't be a flowerhorn, not even sure you can call it a fortune fish, but I think I can breed something really phenomenal. The pattern of the jag seems to come through extremely well when crossing it to another species, it also seems to pick up crazy blue from texas and or jd and turns it into something out of this world. I think you could safely back cross to jag and still retain a lot of that blue. Add some texas and a little bit of syn and it all equals worm pearls, kok, large size...and fertile males if I do my back crossing properly. Very geeked at the moment!
