All steel tank...DISADVANTAGES

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
After all the info and help with this i am going with all wood, mite aswell as there arnt enough benefits to make a tank from steel.

Earthstudent,

My first plan was to build it from wood with a similar design to the post you gave, My design involves 4x2 and 4x1 timber with 3/4 ply and a few layers of grp. To make it stronger i will be doing moyice and tenon joints on the uprights going into the top and bottom frames.
I mite start a build thread soon after xmas once i have got a bit of the garden done and the build area as i will be building it on the other side of the garden them lifting it into place.

thanks again all

I think you made the right choice going with wood. My exact design could be scaled up to your tank size. I don't think moyice & tenon joints are necessary but would not hurt either. Not sure what grp is?

Good luck with your build. You should definitely do a build thread.

GRP is the same as fibreglassing, GRP = Glass reinforced palstic.

I have in the last few days decided to build a smaller tank of 6x4x3 ( 450g uk ) to go in the front room/lounge, this will be to grow on for the fish even more and then maybe a ray tank or whatever comes along, the 1500g big tank will be done so i can keep the RTCxTSNC i have, and hopefully when the silver aro i have when fully grown can go in the big tank with the rays and hybrid plus a peacock bass if i can get some.

When i bet the smaller tank done i will get rid of the 6x2x2 i have and fund the big tank, that mite cover the glass LOL.

I will start the build thread as soon as i get the gear together, as will the other tank.

I plan to use 3x2 for all the bearers and 18mm ply for the 450g with 15mm plate glass, should do the job.
