I was thinking about getting an albino sterlet after I end up building a 300 gal diy aquarium or get my 300 gallon outdoor pond to stay at 69f. Two questions

1.What do you guys use to keep them cool ? chillers, A/C room etc

2. How much would an albino sterlet run in the states?

P.s. I know sturgeon need prestine water that is well oxygenated and i can do that along with a proper diet.
Thanks to all that respnd

I think there are hatcheries in Cali that can sell your sterlets. Forgot the price as the hatcheries down in Chico have closed. There is a hatchery in Redding or Red Bluff, ask them if they know of places that have it or if they have it.

Are you sure you can't acclimate them to warmer waters? I saw a paddlefish with a tigrinus cat so it was in warmer waters. My wels is in fluctuating temps depending on the weather outdoors.

Srterlets will acclimate to 74f but it will shorten thier life like a cigarette would a persons.
They do their best at 69f . Ill check out about those hatcheries tomorrow.

I've been able to keep my albino and natural in low to mid 70s. I just provided a ton of aeration, water flow, and performed water changes every couple of days. I kept mine with paddlefish in large round tanks. I never used a chiller. They're tank was kept in the house and I keep the house at those temps. I only know of sturgeon breeders on the west coast. I've never heard of a sterlet hatchery outside of europe. I bought mine online for around $65/ea + shipping.

Oddball what are the dimensions of the round tank and was it diy or bought .

I grew the young out in a 210 gal round acrylic lobster tank (bought from a Piggly Wiggly that closed). When they reached 8-10", they were transferred to a 70"W x 30"H 460 gal polyethylene stock bin. The w/d filter was a 150gal rubbermaid poly bin with a pump pushing 2250gph at 0 head. I figure the pump topped out at about 1800-1900gph at the 30" head.

has anyone tried keeping sturgeon outside?

I see why not keepign it outside, just find a way to keep the water aerated and cool. Maybe a tarp and if need be a chiller.

The fish farm in Chico had sturgeon outside with no problems......they are closed now so now idea what ever happened

sounds like a soumd idea mkman
