All the good fish stores are shutting down!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its funny to me that as MFK'ers, we dont even realize that we are a HUGE part of that particular problem. Just look at a few sections of this site...

DIY: How many people have built sumps for 1/10th of what the LFS would have charged? Overflows, too.

Setup/Filtration: Many people arent wasting that quick 20bux on a cheap filter anymore, cuz they asked & got an answer from us, which means the LFS cant sell them a "better" one when they come back.

General Aquaria: This section has single-handedly wiped out the quick & easy "10gallon & an Oscar" sale that every LFS has banked on for decades.

Better info & better access to that info has collapsed industries much larger than ours. Just look at long-distance phone providers, newspapers & magazines, and the incandescent light bulb industry. All are quickly disappearing...

i havent been to alans is it good?

I would not be surprised. One of the stores (Fish Pond on Oxnard) by me told me they plan to sell the business or shut down.
The other store (Dragon Aquarium on Lankershim) has raised his prices so high, I would expect no one to buy from him. He was selling clown loaches (2-3in) for $59.99. Ornate bichers (5-6in) for $69.99. And two small Cuban Cichlids (2in) for $69.99. Amongst other insane prices.
I needed a new impaler for my Fluval 404, he had one for $37.99.

No way I was gonna pay that price, so I got one (new) online for $12.

The guy at Dragon Aquarium is running himself into the ground.
Fish Pond still has decent prices, although they are starting to raise the prices up too.

Underwater Depot on Ventura Blvd has always had ridiculous prices, which is why I seldom buy from them.

The Giant Fish on Ventura Blvd has high prices, and their selection of cichlids is poor. However, they do have many nice saltwater fish, but that is not what I am into.
