All you grammodes keepers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have never seen a grammodes over 5-6" or so, but they are one of my favorite CA's based solely on their appearance. I think they are best kept in a larger community tank, as this seems to bring them out more, but I am no grammodes expert.

Well my female is 5 inches but i've seen many at 8+ inches inches and they are pretty sweet. But it takes time

You might try placing the fish's tank in between two others (if you have the rooom/tanks). In my experence that will help with the shyness, but nothing will turn a grammodes into a dovii....

I would move on to something else if I was in that situation. You'd be better off with a pair of jaguars or istlanum...freddies as you mentioned.

I'm like you, I like when guests look at my fish and say wow thats really cool and get a grasp of why I like the hobby so much. Its MY hobby and no I don't care what others think but I do get satisfaction out of peoples expressions when they see my large outgoing fish. Rehome them if your not happy and move on to what your really looking for in aquatic inhabitants!

Grammodes are known to be shy in nature. Mine hides when I get too close to the tank, but when lights are dim or out he goes nuts in killing rampaged.

id say get rid of the grammodes and stick to the pair of freds in the tank. theyre awesome fish. my pair is one of my favorites, and watch out when they spawn there colors get insane

I have a pair of shy grammodes, I only see them if I sit motionless for at least 15 minutes 4 feet in front of the tank until they feel it's safe, or if they are guarding fry. Lots of floating plants help a little in making them feel secure. But it's an evolved, successful, survival technique of no use to them to change. Very hard to get a decent photo of.

My beani are much the same.

Very nice Freddy pair. Its lookin like the freddys may be the way for me to go. I'm going to attempt some advice I got from Dan and see where that leads with the grammodes

I agree with jowens, my experience with grammodes, I had raised one in a 20 long gallon tank that would not do much in the tank, and I have raise one in a 300 gallon tank that was not shy, he would grab the pellet food as I feed it to him, although he was sharing the tank with other cichlids, so he would get the food as they would... Yes I believe that they are more outgoing when you have them in a large tank. Although as you all know, they are monsters when sharing the tank with other cichlids...
