Allergy / Sneezing from Prime Water Conditioner?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not related to fishkeeping but when I bought my house (bank foreclosure) there was an area of mold in the laundry area, treating/getting rid of the mold was a very intensive process.
If you have mold that is causing your 'allergy' symptoms chances are it's not just in the carpet but also in/on the subflooring, cleaning the carpet won't do anything for this type of mold (it could make it worse as you would be adding moisture in the cleaning process - no matter how much carpet cleaning companies claim their process leaves carpets dry, moisture still gets through to the subflooring). If you want to be sure you really have to see under the carpet and any underlay, and if yours is the ground floor appartment you need to check in the basement/crawlspace if you have one.

I remember a story of another fish keeper who was taking a bottle of prime with them and at the airport the inspector opened the bottle broke the seal and took a smell

Molotov in prime, how creative

Wow I didn't know mold was such a problem. For example, if something happened and I had a water leak in my apartment, I thought we could just clean it and the water would evaporate. With all of this mold talk, if we had an earthquake or catastrophe where the tank leaked say 15-20 gallons into my apartment flooring, I can be looking at a hefty bill for the mold cleanup huh? This might be the final straw and I might have to part ways with my tank.

Regardless whether some has or has not had problems with Prime. If you think it may be causing problems stop using it and go back to what you were using and see if the sneezing stop. I have allergies and I know it is a pain.

That is a very simple and smart plan. I may go back to API conditioner soon. I bought a ton of Seachem Prime though. I think it may be freeze-dried bloodworms or freeze-dried Krill with it's heavy smell that is getting to me. I will experiment and see though. Thanks everyone for suggestions. If anyone else has these problems and is curious how it turns out, just leave a msg and I'll update this in 1-2 weeks when I get better.

So far so good. I removed Krill/bloodworms from my room, cleaned water, and am doing better. I may use carbon filter to kill any more odors soon.

It's likely the bloodworms.. just the other day there was a discussion about them.. and how allergies can crop up even from inhaleing the freeze dried stuff. also would suggest thinking about whats changed in your habits since you first had symptoms? also if your getting a "moldy smell" make sure it's not your water.. sometimes water quality issues can give you a "moldy" smell. personally I can't stand the smell of prime or hikari massivore lol.

Like your doing.. start ruleing stuff out.
