Alligator Gar / Crocodile Gars

I often see alligator gars but never crocodile gars. Are they the same species?

I have heard Florida Gars being referred to as Crocodile Gars. I don't know much about gars though, perhaps I am wrong.

no, alligators are a true species-atractosteus spatula- whereas crocodile gars are hybrids.
croc I=gatox x shortnose
croc II=gator x florida/spotted
croc III=gator x longnose

Actually, you CAN get a crocodile gar...you just have to catch it yourself! I have a croc III mounted on my wall, 6' 3", was too big for my tank. But, I've seen several that were smaller, in the 3-4 foot range. Never seen small ones, although I suspect you could breed your own pretty easily. The male alligator gar often spawn with the large female longnose in east Texas.
