ALLIGATOR GAR Episode of River Monsters tonight!

Awesome. Thanks for the reminder Sol!

On now, and it is awesome. Tune in!

I can't believe they had to use a drill to tag the fish. They have some MONSTER armor!

yeah, whenever telemetry work is done on gars they just about always have to use drills. for our tagging (not telemetry) we use metal fin clips on the dorsal fin.

i thought they did a good job with the program in spite of a few errors (but of course some of us fish nerds are going to pick up on that). in terms of giving the gator gar (and gars in general) some publicity and positive presentation, they did a good job overall.

a couple errors to note that i thought were amusing:

- at the beginning when they show all the other species of gars in diagram form (most of which are the same illustrations i have on lepisosteidae.net by emily damstra), they ID the Florida gar as a spotted gar.

- they say gator gars only live to 60, where we had a specimen aged to 79 at a recent conference symposium on gar aging.

- they were catching longnose gar a couple times and calling them gator gar (not outright, but they lead you to believe they were getting small gators).

again, i was really excited about a gar show, and they did a good job with it IMO --

I liked the show, and I especially liked the fact that they are trying to create a view that gar are not just "rough fish" in spite of the fact that they may not taste great. I plan on going gar fishing on the Minnesota River and I'd appreciate some tips (will start a thread). Thanks for the reminder Sol, it was definitely worth an hour of my time.
