Alligator Gar Questions....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
alligator gars can get 8-10 feet long and weigh over 300 pounds

about 5ft for captive gars, but i haven't seen many over 3ft in home aquariums. prolly cause they're still young.

My question is, for everyone who has, had or knows someone who had a Alli. Gar, what are their statistics on their fish. I've read a lot about how big they get and it seems like a good amount of people has or had Alli. Gars. As a new Alli. owner I wanna get a better idea and understanding on the growth of them in an aquarium?
Everyone seems to post "who has the biggest one" or the "biggest tank" but not enough detail on their statistic on their size and age.
No one ever write full info on how big and how old it was when they first purchased it and how long they had it and how big it is now...
I would like current owners to write something like this : age/size when first purchase - and age/size of it currently, on top of writing the size of tank (or different size tanks if needed to change) On MFK and in all the web I've only seen 2' maybe 3' on home aquariums and thats small compared to what everyone talks about. Unless this is a "new" fish in home aquaria, I would assume people have had Alli. Gars since the 90's if not earlier. Well, I would love to hear from those people or experienced people write their experience w/their Alli. Gar growth and what ended up happening?! Did they give it away? Let it go @ the local lake or pond? or killed it?
I would tell people w/gars to keep a monthly record of their growth or maybe have MFK make a spreadsheet for owners to write their Gars size, age, and monthly growth.
If we get 100 people doing this for a year, it would be a tremendous discovery for everyone (no one has ever kept that kind of record on gars) The only records are about the Alli. Gars they fish or bowed out from the wild and they have no idea of it's age or how fast/or slow they really grow...
So I would encurrege people to start making a record book and sharing it w/all of us other Gar lovers so we can all help each other understand their growth.

-Cheers

One more thing guys, if you say you got one (no matter what size) Prove it and start showing pictures of a close up of the gar and a whole tank picture (like the 2 I posted earlier in this thread. We are at a time that digital cameras are very cheap like $20 cheap. and we all have computers and a little time on out hands... so Do IT! Do IT NOW!
Prove what you got! (and don't forget to give details, details, details)

-Cheers

annoyingly ignorant...:irked:

first off why are you asking for info after you have purchased the fish??

secondly, it's been said a thousand times here(look up THREE posts and you'll see i've already answered the question you were gonna ask.) There are many people(here and otherwise) that have kept 5+ft alligator gars currently or in the past. and just in case you don't believe me...http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27972&page=21
look at post #201

finally, many people have done this sometime before...so do some research before shooting your mouth off.

first off to jdamian -

as stated in some of the earlier posts of this thread, a lot of that info is in the forum (and others) if you search for it. a lot of the basic info is easily found, although some of the details you requested take more work and not many are willing to do this. some of us, like richard (Polypterus) and myself do keep records of our gars and have been able to create threads with a lot of updated info on gar growth, feeding, husbandry, etc. for further information, feel free to email me E_americanus@hotmail.com or him.

xander does have a point in that for a species like a gator gar, one should do a good amount of research beforehand, as this fish is the least ideal of the gar species for the home aquarium. of course, preliminary research should be done before purchase of any fish, but in some circumstances (such as this one) there is nothing that can be done about that now.

i would suggest looking into other threads and sources for further info, and like i said, richard and i would be willing to help you out there.

to xander -

don't be too harsh, we've all been there with buying fishes before adequate research. you've also only kept gars for a relatively short time, so going off on others who are newer to keeping these fish doesn't help perpetuate confidence in this aspect of the hobby, nor does it encourage others to seek further help. i've been there too back in the day, and trust me, keeping several species over a brief time doesn't make one an expert...ALL of us are still learning quite a bit about these fish.

jdamian does bring up a good point in that a lot of the threads that come up are useless...especially the obnoxious "biggest gar thread" where most people just run their mouths off but no one posts pics...but the overall annoyance is that people seem to think comparisons of the biggest gars actually means something regarding status or other BS. just my two cents on that--

we don't need to prove anything to you. but just for fun. i'll show you what i caught out of my friends pond. he's 2.5'long and no one knew he was in there(except we who sneaked it in;)) and now his dad finally knows why all his koi died.
