Got this guy about a month ago at about 4". He is now about 8" and a lot thicker a month later. Definitely the fastest growth I've ever seen in any fish! Still on goldfish and other live fish. Doesn't seem to be interested in dead foods, and I haven't tried pellets. Any ideas or tips on what I should try to do to get him on pellets? What are the benefits of pellets vs live fish? I know the basics like cost effectiveness and nutrition but how does it compare to pellets? What would be the best pellets and where could I get them for the cheapest? Thanks and by the way the first picture was taken December 13, 2014; the second was taken January 20, 2015.

I have a Florida gar that refuses all but krill. My other gar eats anything. I mostly feed him jumbo carni-sticks. He's getting obese from scooping up all of the food that his counterpart refuses.

I went from tetra jumbo krill->carni-sticks with the one that eats things that don't wiggle. Had to trick him into eating his first non living meal by dropping it on his head.

Shortly after posting I got the smaller gar to eattwo large pieces of talapia off of tongs! I was feeding my big congicus and he swooped in and grabbed it!

Wow nice! My only problem is that I haven't seen him eat so I doubt I could get him to eat pellets :( what is your opinion on that? Where do you buy carnisticks and whats a good price for them?

first off Wow! amazing growth rate. I think the feeders made him grow faster. Since you havent seen him eat yet, I think you should not dump all of them in the tank all at once at dump like one or two in each day. once he starts getting accustomed to that, he will take food whenever he has the chance and at that point you could try tilapia fillets, market shrimp, prawns, or any type of fish fillet or silversides. Once he accepts those, you can stuff pellets inside the food. That way hell be eating pellets and the fillets or whatever you choose. Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot! He still is on feeders but will be upgraded to a larger tank hopefully tomorrow, along with a rtc, green sunfish, and American eel. I'll do another update shortly. That info helps me a lot. After he is eating those pellets in the food am I supposed to try to feed straight up pellets? Do you think that the green sunfish, who eats anything and everything, could act as a teacher fish for him? I still have yet to see him eat, the only signs besides growth and the occasional bulge in his stomach are injured and missing feeders. Thanks again!
