Wow, maybe I'm just lucky then. I had my smallest gator in with my floridas till it was 16-17", with the smallest florida aroud the 8" mark.

FWIW I have had others work out, but really with Gators it is always a crap shoot to mix them with anything. In general the best rule is if you do not intend it to be killed or food just don't keep it with a Gator gar.

This is what I'm talking about.

Well i bought one anyways ill experiment, im sure that he will end up getting way bigger than the florida gar but its going to take a while before he ends up over taking them either way i have a plan ahead of time to make sure that this tank is up and ready. if all goes to hell then ill just get rid of him by asking anyone on here or at my LFS if they have a person who would be willing to buy this fish.

But dont hate i do not ever buy a fish without looking ahead of time to make sure that i have enough time and money so im sure that i can be ready for any of my fish to get big. It would just be a personal choice and a smart one in my opinion so that i dont kill the fish or stunt the fishes growth.

I will post on here of the fishes growth and just starting out pictures he really only is 3" and is stuck in my 125 gallon for the time being.

wow, seems like two personalities in this post...one somewhat responsible, the other completely irresponsible...and guess which one wins out??? if this was your "plan" then you should have skipped getting the gar.

For the most part I agree with this, but even as you suggest it can sometimes work out. But you have to be prepared to separate the fsh should issues arise. There are other factors that would have to be considered as well such as feeding, tank size, choice of tankmates, and the temperment of the individual gator gar.

It will not take that long for it to catch up to the florida gar.

You will have a very hard time rehoming these fish past a certain size, usually 12-18".

I also have to ask did you read the stickies in regards to the step up method of raising gars? You can very easily lose that gar in that size of tank due to a broken back.

If that is what you wish to do then YOU GO!!!!! You can prepare to separate, You can experiment with tank size and feeding and Tankmates and observe your fish meticulously to determine unpredictability into predictable...

Me I'm keeping it simple and to the point that does not require experimentation or much else really. Stating the obvious... If you do not want it killed or fed upon then just do not keep it with a Gator.. That's all, simple to the point and will end up 100% of the time successful outright with no feelings hurt when things go down the toilet.

I had a 16" gator with a 16" florida and had zero issues. I added 2 19" gators and within 2 days I came home to the florida with its lower jaw ripped off and flapping in the breeze. I had to put the florida down, this is just my experience so I think it depends on the individual fish. All 3 gators get along fine as long as they are well fed.

The experts have already spoken.. Please follow their advice.

Just sharing my experience: I kept Gator Gars with my FL Gars from when the Gators were about 5-6 inches (and FGs were about 10") to when the Gators were about 18" and the FL Gars were about 15".

Didn't see any issues among the Gar. (Also had a Silver Aro with them which was initially 1 ft and close to 18" when the Gators hit that mark and had to be given away).

Gators ate two Silver Sharks (7") when they were about 12" to 14".. And tried to eat a 8" Endli (who I got out before any damage was done.)
