Alligator Gars in SALTWATER

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it does not surprise me since they get to be so huge and are such hearty fish that they can easily survive in salt water with ease.

oooh this is giving me ideas

I could survive in the desert, but it doesn't mean I'd like it.

ReGARdless, I hope they continue to have success with this. It's pretty cool.

so can flowerhorn they can go in salt as well lol i too also learn something new today wow

there are a lot of guapote, which are the central american large cichlids, dovii, etc...that have been found, in Costa Rica in Salt water, there was a TFH article on it with pictures a few years back.

Also, I've heard first hand from a friend/biologist down Brazil that found stingrays, arowanas, and pacus in a landlocked salt water lake, oscars breeding, until the rainy season hits and they're able to move out.

ive seen it there.

How is the aquarium again? last time i went was after katrina and they were mixing a bunch of blood parrots for filler in there S.A. displays.

I left new orleans yesterday afternoon. lol

Yeah, there ar elots of cichlids that can live in seawater. Considering they are closely related to the Saltwater damselfish.

It makes sense that gator gars can venture into saltwater, just never seen them in salt water.

Many fish living in the estuaries and mouth openings of rivers can convert back and forth and in time develop either into saltwater or freshwater.

Some species

Striped Bass
Atlantic Stingray
Uropthalmus ( Mexican tailspot or False Festae)
Tilapia ( Many species)
Many types of livebearers

Etc

down in new orleans we see them in the wild hunting in saltwater lakes it seems to be mostly a late spring and summer thing.we have measured some over 5 close to 6 feet.
