Some Monster Fish should never be house IMO. Mekong Catfish, Alligator Gars, Arapaimi, etc. They're BIG. And as nice as they are to have, unless you have the funds to give it a...I don't know...5000 gallon aquarium/pond and appease it's appetite, I would say don't do it.
Arapaimag can house all of them in 1 tank. 1 Megatank.

Dude now three straight posts I have read stating you would like to get a fish but it gets to big for your taste and now your saying some monsterfish should not be housed in home aquarium and you name arapaima mekong etc... Those might be the top level of fish to not keep but if RTC and Shovelnose are not included in that list which I think they should be they have to be in the next tier down of fish that require huge tanks. I'm not talking about 300 gallon huge. I saw you said ATF's get to big and Alligator gar, how big do you think your RTC shovelnose is going to get? It will be huuuuuuge man.

I agree. I'm not saying they can't be kept. I think along the line of who really has a set up that can pull it off? An adult Arapaima needs 30K or more. I'd toss the alligator gar in the size group as well. Nothing shy of 15K-20K for an adult.

Some of the large bodied cats need more than most would assume as well. Red tails and tiger shovel nose being two of them. I'd say 1,000 gallons should be minimum for those types.

We need to stop asking "can I?" and start asking "should I?" instead.

Now that's a monster Fish!! :headbang2

Try thawed frozen lake smelt and chunks of mouth sized fresh water whitefish/trout/salmon. My gar loves these.
