They are usually not that bad. Though the one big guy kept thinking I was gonna hand feed him today and kept following me around. Thanks as well, it's a pretty fun combination. Hoping to eventually add some more larger longnoses and I would like to try some more bowfins again.

how are they not fighting?

Unfortunately there has been some fighting recently. Lost two bowfins and had one get beat up. Let that girl heal up, switched up some stuff, added the fake plants in. Since then back to having no major issues. There is some nipping, but that is part of having a gator gar comm.

Looking good!!
Do they tolerate cold water? The gar I mean

What do you feed them? The gars never seem to be full, always eating..

I've tried a couple different feeding schedules with these guys. Currently they get about 3-4oz of pellets per day, with a once a week feeding of 1-2 lbs of frozen food. For frozen foods I tend to alternate between squid, whiting, mackeral, and sardines. I'll occasionally mix in other things depending on what's available locally.

The can all tolerate some relatively cool water. In the winter I usually drop the pond temperature down to about 65F, though they could take it lower. Longnoses and bowfins can be found pretty far north. Gators had historically ranged quite far north.

Yea I was wondering the same thing how deep would I have to make an outdoor pond in IL with the cold winters. Can they handle getting froze over like koi

I personally would go at least 4'. As far as it freezing over some can handle it. It's a bit of a complex issue that has come up gefore. I would suggest doing a search if you have a further interest in setting up an outdoor gar pond.
