hey folks. I just got a baby alligator snapper ,about 2 1/2 " across the shell. anyone know how big of an enclosure I'll need when this behemoth is full grown?and should i make a basking area available. it's got one now and never uses it. :headbang2

they are pretty much fully aquatic - I have never seen mine out of the water -- growth is slow so you'll not be needing a huge enclosure for quite a while !!!

For a full grown AST you will need a small pond pretty much, on the up side you can dig it at a rate of a couple shovelfuls a day, it will be a while before it needs it.

give it a little rock to get out on

got a tank for a 250 pound turtle :)

pm or posy any questions or problems if you have any:)

I dont think you need to worry about a basking site. Your turtle can stay submerged for its entire life.

One question..........how did you obtain it?? Just wondering.

I do provide a basking site for mine. I also provide a basking lamp. At fist I didn't add the lamp, but had it laying around so decided to use it. I find that they love it and if they are ever out of the water they are under the basking spot, nowhere else.

Can you buy these little guys in stores? I have never seen them in a pet store before. The only places I have seen them are in ponds around my house, but they do go out of the water in nature, if no one knows about this. Countless times my dad will come home with a baby snapping turtle which he says he finds either crossing the road or just sitting on the side of it, "my dads a big jogger all over the place", But he brings them home, then we put them in a tub for a couple days and put him back in a nearby pond.
Two different recent turtles that papa brought home

sry, the second ones a little blurry.

like most all reptiles, a "basking" light that has uvb rays is always a good idea, even if the particular turtle does not spend extended amounts of time basking..... they need uvb to help with calcium adsorption...

my girlfriend has an alligator snapper... her son obtained it from someone here in mich... she has had it for a little over a year now... did not show much growth until recently but is now "picking up" the pace in that department.... is not about the size you mentioned at this time.... is one of those ugly but cool type of critters...

like you said, i provide a "land" area but have yet to see this snapper use it!
