lol i cant believe to imagine wat is considered a BIG meal for him!

If you are feeding pretty big hunks of fish I would feed him twice a week. Of course, if you like doing water changes/tank cleaning, feed him more often!

I feed my common snapping turtle pellets every day (Try and teach them to eat pellets early and they will keep eating them) and live fish every month or so. Pellets are good because they are heavily fortified with vitamins and minerals. I also feed cut strips of fish. I had a bag of frozen scallops that got freezer-burned, he loved those!

2x a week for mine each feeding = 1 whole smelt

mine loss interest in pellets after he got bigger. i dont think they were big enough for him. yeah, dont feed huge items. feed smaller pieces he can swallow whole. he will make a complete mess out of the tank if you let him rip something up. i made that mistake a few yrs ago when i fed him a 22 inch sucker/carp. AHHHHHHh what a mess. i usually feed him frog legs, catfish fillet, and blue gill that i catch and freeze for later use. thawed out rodents once in a while. he loves crayfish. a couple yrs ago i was fishing and badly hooked a 14 inch smallie that died. so i brought the dead fish home and fed it to him. he actually swallowed that whole!!!!
