Alligator snapping turtle with fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Same here! Most of my guppies will get to a large almond size, but these must of been a fat group... they're like mollies, but the colors (or lack of) of a guppy.

Tiny fish that the turtle will just ignore.

This. They can't sustain themselves on small fish. It's like us eating a peanut one at a time and making a meal of it.

It's actually the opposite with them. Small fish will likely go unnoticed, big fish get snapped.

I've always wanted to grow out a big ugly AST. Maybe another ambush predator could work? I would like to think South American Leaf fish would work since they tend to get up against plant leaves or in them and not move around a lot. AST use their tongue as bait most of the time anyway. That's not something the leaf fish go for. They likely would not cross paths or give each other grief. No promises with a hungry reptile though.

For the zoo comment.. I've seen an enclosure in dallas but the AST was on the bottom of a 4 ft tall tank. There was a big gap and like I say, ambush predators may mix better. I tend to think gars wouldn't look for something wiggling close to the bottom like a fake bait on an AST tongue. They'd likely both be after feeder fish or in the wild, the blue gill looking for scraps when they aren't hiding. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, you're going to need space for a gar to swim out of range of an AST. Not just to the side, but above as well. All this with consideration to no AST attempting to swat or snap if one passes too closely precariously.

EDIT: SA Leaf fish and gar aren't cheap so maybe be prepared for that kind of expense when calculating the risk.

ASTs are ambush predators. Even small fish are at risk due to this species' use of a 'lure' adaptation of it's tongue. Fish attracted to 'the worm' wind up swimming into the wrong cave.

what weird question to me

it's like asking if there are any zebras that can be kept with a pet croc

or any steak that can be kept in my house

No way I'd put a fish with one of those. In sure even the zoo loses a fish from time to time.
