i plan on getting one of these in spring, would like to know everything i need, if you know a good care sheet that would be great

:nilly:haha yeah i gathered that

thanks, what do i need to feed them, i plan on keeping him in my backyard with a pond, just a pond and my grassy backyard, am i missing anything?

It must be a big pond, the bigger the better(even if you fail to see your turtle most of the time you can be assured she will trive) as these are the biggest native US freshwater turtle. Are you buying adult or young? If hachling it would be much better to raise her indoors and then transfer her into the outdoors when about 10 inches. Dont forget they like not very deep water;) They are mostly botom walkers. Some native aquatic plants would be nice as well some smood rocks and logs. You could also try to establish some fish in the pond like sun fish wich would give your turt something to snak and hunt. It would also free you more if you want to head on vacacion for like a week:D

yeah im gonna try to find a small adult around the 12" shell area, it will be outdoors in the biggest pond i can get im gonna capture it, so yeah ill see what i can find, ill get it real deep with lots of wood to get some dark tannins going, and plants, try to get some catch some fish to put in there as well, what would be the most cost effective filtration for an outdoor pond?

Woa woa your going to cach it:eek: I though your going to buy it! Well at the very least consider to check on your state rules this guys are protected in most states were they ocurr. Also consider that this guys are in most places declining to habitat destrucion and because populacions dint yet recover from being massively exploited for meat many years ago before being protected! Knowing that only one in many dozen hachlings makes it to adulthood, shows how you can make a very hard blow on a populacion just by taking a few mature individuals. If your still doing it, please consider taking one hachling and raise it to adulthood(it doesant takes much long before they get quite big because they are eating machines) or at the very least take a male one.
