Oh yeah man, they think they are back in the river going upstream!

I'd be doing something in the room the tank is in and hear splashing, needless to say the eel would be hanging out in the filter like..."hey, what's wrong?".

Now it's too fat and long to go in there...yessa!

My tiretrack did that way back. Then he got all the way out and died. The lesson? Bulletproof that lid! You want to give an earthworm a hard time crawling through it. Use tape, plastic pieces, rocks and glass, anything to make that thing sealed as it can be. I'd look into canister filters as they are much easier to seal around than a HOB.

The sponge is a great idea for the waterfall, just use very large pores so it doesn't clog. HOB's are known for quickly clogging internally and bypassing, so particulates will most likely get into the return sponge. Larger pores mean it will probably never clog in a week.

thats normal for a fire eel to make a swin for it mine has found a new hiding spot....the intakes on my filters when he jumps out of the tank completly its a hassle returning him back to the tank cause he goes crazy and plus he's 31inches

I have a fluval 305 on the tank also. But as far as the hang on the back filter, i just ended up pushing the glass canopy all the way to the back so it butts up again the returns on it. He hasn't ventured since then. With my fire eel being a 16" fatty which resembles a "snake", it scared the heck out of the girlfriend when i got a call at work only an hour into the day saying "babe the eel is gone!". No hun its in the filter, but i dont want him there for another 8 hours until i get home so this is all u. haha she was screaming and everything, trying to get him out giving the coworkers a great laugh while listening to it over the speaker haha. good times.
