"Almost Lazy" methods

I am amazed at how my friend takes care of his 55 full of goldfish he inherited with his parents old house. Just adds tap water with no dechlor or anything, lets water line drop to mid level, keeps the lights no alot, doesn't clean the algae much, and i'm still unsure what kind (if any) of filtration. He may have an UGF but has only one airstone in there. he has 8 goldfish 3-5 inches, all look healthy and still alive everytime i go over there.
