in the Living Water
Mods I don't know if you would move this to setup/filtration, but if you seem that this thread is justifiably a setup/filtration thread, please do so.
(in advance thanks, and sorry for the extra work.)

Before I go with my queries regarding this "Self sustaining aquariums", please do click the link: http://www.tuncalik.com/2009/09/biotope-in-my-study/
and read.

-So what do you think about it?
-Do you think that this would be a great bio-type for a huge tank? (ofcourse time and modifications must be met)
-Would you try to have a set up?
-Special question, how do you guys think about the WC? Is it the same as 25% per 3 days/ 2x a week sched or what?

Thanks in advance!

Excellent link. It's a living biotope that requires basically no input other than nature (leaves, sunlight) and some thoughtful selection of critters / plants. Pretty nice set up.

seems like a cool idea. the fish i like would never hack it in something like that but if you can find compatible fish then i say go for it

I was thinking of a angel/discus tank with this, preferably I'll add some G. Altifrons if they work out that is, ofcourse the part where the food comes in will be still be the same, human part. I may go 6x6x2 for this, I just don't know really when to start, having floods here in the Philippines isn't good right now.

How about waterchanges? Do you think we it's still the same rate?

I didn't really read through the whole link since i'm at work, but judging by the pics, it seems hes basically relying on the plants for filtration?

While i think this sort of setup can and most likely does work well for small fish which produce minimal waste, then yeah, you could probably pull something like this off without ever really having to do too many water changes...

The problem i see with this type of system for large fish is, A) they produce much more waster compared to a fish that maxes out at 1" - 2" B) the foods we feed monsters tends to be dirtier, so that may cause problems with the water C) for a large fish, you would need a crazy amount of plants on top and inside the tank to help keep parameters in check...

But i guess if you could pull all the above off, then there is probably a chance it will work as long as the tank is VERY lightly stocked...

Really cool! It's like those bio-orbs!! Def achievable no doubt but I'm sure to get everything balanced would take some careful planning. I've seen quite a few reef tanks this way were all that was used was either a power head or wave maker for the current the corals needing. Thanks for the link bro!

That's a fact, actually I'm also considering that, cause most of the guys here will have "monsters", but considerably, there are a lot of plants that can occupy space at minimum, has a quick methods for propagation (i.e lucky bamboo), thriving in lowlight, and just 'to plant and trim is all to do'. I can fairly suggest this to a channa tank, but being escape artists I think it still has holes tho, but for anyone who wants a small tank, this is recommendable, low electricity bill, low maintenance, almost man-made nature.

Yeah, it would take months tho to get a set up running, from planning, to plants searching, planting, grow outs, everything as is will be slow but rewarding!

I would agree that with a lot of very careful planning, and taking into account the type and amount of fish you keep in such a system it would be doable... infact would be interesting to see some one actually try this and document the whole thing from start to finish to see just how feasible this would be?
