Hi All,

I would like to know whether it is detrimental to keep only one ray? Whenever i see rays on offer over here they are always sold in pairs (male and female). I used to have a pair and a female died couple of days after arrival (despite eating and acting normal before).

Now, i have a single male pup eating and growing by himself (in the company of aros and a bichir).

I wonder is the companionship necessary. I don't think i ever saw ray keepers on MFK with only ONE ray. Should i get a companion for him? And if i split a pair at LFS, would it be detrimental to the remaining one? If i get a pair, would the males get along with only one female?

Your input is greatly appreciated ^^

Most people keep them in paris, so they can breed them. ;)

They live by themselves in the wild. So you can keep him alone if you wish to.

OK thanx ^^. Alone it is, i am not interested in breeding them

well, after growing out the remaining male for more than half the year - i got confident enough to go and get another motoro.

at the moment, she is by herself with black aro baby. very hyper active and eating from day one (shrimp and floating aro sticks) ... she actually goes to the surface and takes them (which spooks black aro sometimes). my other male ray never did that (but then again he is housed with rather large aros). I am more concerned about ray kililng black aro (after seeing G8's picture)

anyway, you guys recon i can put a baby female ray with an alot bigger male? Will male kill her? also ther is a rather large jar and green aro with the male ............ or should i wait until the baby girl grows out some more? He is approx. 10 to 11" while the female is only 3-3.5"

cheers

I think a single ray is will be OK. My male has been the only ray in my tank for years and he's fine.

Rays can be kept on their own but do better in groups

its also better and safer to have a larger female than the male

if your male is bigger than the female you can expect problems in the future when the male will beat up the female bad

I agree, even though my female is a few inches larger than my male, she still got bit quite a bit during breeding. About 1/5 of her back got bit and scarred and she turned really dark (spots only now a year later coming back). She is still healthy, eats well and continues to breed.
