Yesterday my sister was sick so I got to mooch off her trip to the doctors office (over in St Louis) and seize this as an opportunity for fish.

I bought 6 peacocks and I can already tell who the dominant male is. I have one dark one which I thought was the male in the first place, but now I think it is the female since it shows no color on the face like the others.

They are settling in fine, but I have a couple questions.

These don't dwell in the rocks like the Mbuna do they? I bought about 30+ pounds of slate for the tank and only used about 1/3 of it. Granted there are already decorations in the tank, I set them up as view blockers (vertical and against the back of the glass) and set the rest up leaning on the decor and such, but it seems like only one is really using them. I will maybe wait until aggression is a problem and use the excess slate as an emergency territory divider or something.

Also, they are a bit small to be fed my cichlid gold mini pellet and they don't ever come to the top anyway. I am using an emperor 400 and a powerhead in the back corner. I think I am going to take the powerhead out because it seems like they aren't too fond of the current. Is this why they aren't going to the top?

Last night I feed them some frozen spiriluna brine shrimp and turned the lights off pretty early. This morning I fed them some tetracolor flakes, but I am thinking of trying some of my african cichlid attack sinking pellet that I use for my handicapped bloodparrot and african leaf fish.

Any suggestions for a staple food? I don't want to just fed them SBS all the time, but they loved that. They did go after the flakes as well, but not as much as the SBS.

Ok last question. Should I get more than just 6? I am thinking of going back and getting another 4. Maybe that will help disperse the aggression when they are small and then I can decide who needs to go back to the LFS.

Thanks for all your help.

I would not put in more than 9... are they all male? I would not worry about too much extra rock... they are not rock dwellers... They will hide, but will swim up higher as well...

I had 6 in mine awhile ago and it worked out really good I liked it like that. I wouldnt put to much more in. Maybe 3ish or so. Mine half used the rocks and the other half of the time they swam around. I fed mine new life spec. sinking pellets and they liked those, harldy any of my africans will take food off the top though.

Well I bought 4 more so I have 10. I don't know if all are male or female, but it looks like there is definitely one dominant male. They get along quite well, but they are still very small. They are using the rocks more today, and I am just feeding them some flakes every morning and then some frozen SBS at night. There is one runt and I am not sure if it will live. It is skinny and it doesn't go for the food like the others, it usually just picks up sand and spits it out.

Just a question though, do they eat snails? Specifically the trumpet snails? I have about a million of them, and I heard they go underneath the sand and some africans will sense them and take a dive at them. That would be neat to watch.

As far as plecos, should I? I have a hifin spotted growing out in my 29 right now and its a little bigger than them at the moment and I figure this would be a good time to move it to the 55 IF a pleco is alright. I wish there were smaller ones here like gold nuggets or bristlenoses, but I can't find anything except commons, spotted, and rubber lips.

I may just have to get manual with the algae (peacocks don't eat it do they? I thought mbuna did but not peacocks).

I am very thankful you are putting up with my noob questions. I have read a lot, but I just want to run my questions by some actual people before I go and execute them.

I will even post some pics tomorrow maybe.

Definately post some pics. I have 2 male red peacocks, both stay above the rock territory they have claimed. They seldomly hide in the rocks just hover above it. They do come to the top to feed along with their tank mates. I feed my fish a variety of foods, the first being Formula 1 or 2 (freshwater fish) vegtable blocks, frozen blood worms, color flake food, and dried brine shrimp. They love all of it!

I keep 2 types of catfish and 2 pleacos with mine and they do fine so there shouldnt be a problem with it. I personally havent heard of peacocks eating alage and I havent ever seen any of mine eat at it. Post up some pics later too =]

If you add a pleco keep a watch.. they can kill them... Now I would think that they are small right now, but they will get bigger. I would keep an eye out in a smaller tank, too many males with females can be troublesome...

Ok I am thinking of not adding a pleco, but what about those snails? I will do some more googling tonight and see if its ok. I will probably just invest in a magfloat, they're much easier to take care of anyway.

Yah... plecos tend to eventually disappear, snails are often nipped to death... Some have had success with bristle nose plecos but anything else with less armor will disappear even faster. (And the bristle noses will never be seen since they will hide unless they feel safe.)
