I feel for you. I had to put up with watching the laws get more and more hardcore during the 20 years I lived in San Diego and the 4 years I lived in Washington. My company moved me to Mississippi and (SOB) the laws are even worse here.
 
Bowfin are not legal in all states, the are not related to snakeheads and are in their own Order and family, they are Amiiformes Amiidae Amia calva. Unfortunatly the only state on the west coast they are legal in is Alaska.

Bowfin are legal, and have many characteristics of snakeheads, including voracious appetite. Check out this link for great pics and info:

Where Do They Live?
These secretive fish live in the central and southeastern portions of Minnesota. These areas include the Mississippi River and its tributaries as far north as Grand Rapids, the Otter Tail River of the Red River drainage, and some of the tributaries of the St. Croix River.
