Alternative food source for peacock bass?

I have three 12+ inch monos and one 15+ inch temensis that ive had for a few months. They currently feed on hikari floating sticks, market shrimp and smelt. I dont want to change the integrity of their diet but its getting really expensive satisfying their appetite. They dont take well to any other pellets (usually either ignore them or spit them out). Is there any other alternative to their diet that I can try? I did see a thread about a gelatin mixture/contraption? Anyone ever try that creation? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
 
large cichla are spendy. stick to pellets. start selln ur body for fish food...haha.

Agreed, but I would also keep to the shrimp, smelt, silver sides and tilapia. I also fed my older bass crayfish ($10 for 5lbs) when in season. But yes, the bigger the fish the more they eat. Pbass and the word cheap should never be used in the same sentence. Same thing with rays.

Look at local store for seafood mix here I can find cheap stuff like 4.00 a pound

I can see your Mono being picky, but your Tem, mine would eat everything but the kitchen sick, i'm sure he made have tried:).........Good luck.
 
I tell people before trying to house them understand the road that you are going down. That fish the vast majority of times will only consume live fish. Live is even more expensive then what you are feeding. This is a fish that has been known to starve himself to death without live food. I am not sure I would break what they are used to eating.
 
I am not trying to starve them into something different, rather i'd like to supplement their diet with something else that is less expensive to suppress their appetites longer between the "expensive" meals. I understand the obligation in housing larger pbass im just trying to offset the cost of daily living hence gas prices. I found smelt to be very effective as they are the least expensive of food source, however, very messy. I only feed smelt prior to water changes. Thanks again people
 
i always feed mine shrimp stuffed with carnivore pellets..so maybe stuff the shrimp..either way cichla are a expensive fish to feed..eatch cichla keeper has a certain diet for thier cichla and most can say its expensive no matter how you look at it..
