Alternative pellets

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally I would not feed pellets designed for sturgeon, to rays, even as a filler. Sturgeon formulas are typically very high in crude fat as sturgeon require the high fat content, rays on the other hand do not. This has been brought up in a number of discussions over the years. Your fish, your call.
From a thread that I took part in 7 yrs ago, the comment was from Matt (Zoodiver) regarding fatty liver disease.

I will atest to the work NEA did on fatty liver as I used their info in some of the work I've done with captive FW ray husbandry protocols used in many US aquarium facilities.

FLD is an ongoing problem in captive elasmobranch species (not just FW rays). One of MANY topics I wish we shared more openly about from the Symposium a couple years ago at Shedd.

One doesn't have to feed Massivore, or just Massivore if using pellets as part of the diet, there are lots of other brands that are less costly, and have far lower crude fat levels compared to the typical feed designed for Sturgeon.

Too many people seem to equate a fat ray, as being a healthy ray.

thanks RD, i was thinking since rays have very fast metabolism, they will be able to burn the fats?
i think the sturgeon pellets have almost the same fat content as the grouper pellets.

I have given NLS a run before in the past, and didn't really rate the results. Need to feed far too much of it, and the waste that the rays produce is also very soft and easily breaks up, more of a mist of waste rather than an actual spiral shaped piece. Also found when in barebottom tanks NLS fed rays would defecate and then smear it across the bottom. Cr@p skid marks, not the most appealing sight. I also find NLS - particularly when purchased in buckets (which most ray keepers would) is quite dusty.

which NLS is everyone using for their rays? i dont see an particular one made for rays? also anyone using them find out it brings out color of the rays more?

I find that Hikari carnivores made my bd hybrids spots more yellow?

NLS mega fish 10mm pellets. Used them as primary pellet diet source past 5 years. Been testing out some Northfin past 6 months. I steer clear of Hikari.

Just wanted to add, not sure when you last purchased a bucket of NLS, but I haven't seen any dust or fine particles in a bucket of NLS in years. Perhaps this was years back when they were having their food manufactured off site?
The formulas have also changed up a bit over this past year, so hopefully if you try it again you will find an overall improvement.

i started mixing NLS, Northfin and massivore, my rays are looking better than ever IMO. Colors, weight, and activity has all improved tremendously since using all 3
