Alternative Ray Diets - Collective Brainstorm?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Uuugh, sorry for not chiming in sooner here guys.

I started a thread about an alternative to massivore. Most of what I have to say cane be found there.

I would like to state that I practice diversity of diet on lengthened intervals. I feed exclusively pellet anywhere from 3-6 weeks, then mix it up. A little Tilapia here, some crawlers after a good rain, handfuls of smashed grasshoppers after mowing the lawn, whole smelt I net and freeze each Spring. Occasionally I crush mealworms and hand feed these to the rays.
I have found a few springs that teem with Scuds (Amphipoda) and net them by the hundreds if not thousands. I feed them directly to my rays (after a brisk rinsing with my garden hose).

I am working on a gelatin based diet that contains a puree of all the above morsels, no real headway yet, just some trial and error (thank god for dogs and their zeal to lick spills!)

So for what it is worth,
Respectfully,
FireMedic.

let me go through my note books... i might have the perfect thing for you to use...

im lazy and busy studying trying to advance my life.. if you answered emails or had a empty PM box you would see a very nice offer to you i wont put in public....

and i highly recomend buying prepared foods.... seriously the money between us tied into this is not good and set ups are cheap... add costs of heat water foods and labor and its better to buy from a store.... i could offer worms but they go to our rays and friends fish... plus it saves me the headache of waisting my time on here dealing with people who want to buy but wont and keep telling me they will....

I recently began breeding Oreochromis Mossambicus.
They are very simple to breed and very prolific at that.
Even moreso than mollies or convicts.

My setup is going to be completely aquaponic!!!!!
I am very excited about this one.

I am also breeding Marble Crayfish and earthworms.
I am going to feed the crays a mixture of good quality pellets and algae wafers.
The earthworms will be in a compost container. They will be fed egg shells, fruit, leftovers from dinner (only fresh and organic foods) and corn meal.

When all is said and done all I will have to buy are the blackworms.
I would phase these out but my rays enjoy them very much so probably not :)

If anybody is interested in the Tilapia or the crayfish, let me know because the guy I get them from ships :)

just started a compost for red wigglers, I only have 2 large rays. So I think this will be sufficient to start. I started with 5000 wigglers, hopefully they can maintain a steady breeding system. I am also feeding the rays shrimp every once in awhile, when my aro doesn't catch before it hits the bottom of the tank.
