Alternative sources of filter material than pet stores?

I want filter floss, a filter sponge (12x2-3x4), felt, and nylon scrubbers (5 gallons), but since pet-labeled products are often so much more expensive than others, I am looking for other sources to buy these materials, preferably in bulk, but that will not leach chemicals into my system. So, where do you guys get yours from?

Polyester pillow stuffing works great. Just get the kind with no flame retardants. Waaay cheaper than "filter Floss"

Are dollar store scrubbies good? 6 for $1 is the best price I have seen so far.

Anyone know which felts are ok for polishing?

You can get rolls of filter padding from hvac supply houses.

I've buying polyester batting from JoAnne Fabric. There are many types of poly batting and many are too soft or too loose for filtering use. I always buy the 4 oz cut by yard which is nearly always on sale for half the list price.

Order online to ship to your local store, and you pick up... I'm searching now for a scrubbie per cu/ft calculation to see if I need x2 or x3 (96 or 192 or 288) for a few projects I have.
