Alternative to bio balls (other than pot scrubbies)?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The your bio media getting dirty is the problem... I think more thorough mechanical filtration before the bio media is the solution...

and I don't think it will matter what bio media you use... If the dirtiness bypasses your bio media it goes back into the tank, which is yet another place you don't want it...

In my opinion as opposed to using Bio Media in the sump, more of us should consider using hardy plants. As bio media only address ammonia/nitrite and leaves us with elevated nitrates... Plants / a refugium actually takes that third step that everyone talks abotu wanting their filtration to take...

*Please note this is a completely different "argument" than not needing Bio Media... lol

The other day I put some old clay pots back in one of my tanks...As I sat for over an hour, watching the air bubbles "effervesce", I wondered, how efficient crushed clay pots would be, as bio media.

maybe a good filter sock will help. id like to setup a little refugium but thats not something i want right now.

clay pots...interesting. this is probably similiar to ceramic media or lava rock. but i think the pores are so small that theyd clog quickly

That is what I was thinking, but again, where is this clogging coming from? If you prefilter enough, you would think, you could get at least worthy use out of them...And go around collecting them for free...

Army men is something I have seen work. I bet slinkies would work good too!

what about hair curlers? do they still sell those things? i dont think women still use those

I almost did army men once. I found a place online that sold them by the thousands for dirt cheap.
