Alternative to Convicts?

firemouth, cuban, blue acara, electric blue or regular jack dempsey, nicaragua cichlid, festivum, rotkeil severum, numerous geo's?

Any other suggestions for fish that don't closely resemble convicts? Although, i really am warming to the breeding pair idea.

What about any thorichthys or astheros sp.? You might need a sand substrate though. Rapps has robertsonis now.

What about Fire mouths? I love mine great personality, different shape from what you have in there. Will hold there own and great color. They are by far one of my favorite cihlids.

I will have to go against the follow and advise against Salvini. My personal experience was they hid all the time and nipped the tail at everything that went by even my larger GT. They only get that pretty yellow when they are breeding or dominant. I hated mine but that was just my experience.

Also just thought what about severum. You would have to find one bigger than your Con. Temperament they should work with your other fish.

My Sajica hides sometimes, not much. He looks awesome in a tank full of bigger fish. Very slow grower.

I believe my Coatz would be too aggressive for acaras/firemouths/ebjd/severum. He does the chasing in the tank but avoids the oscar.
A regular jd or robertsoni are good options but the coloring looks too similar to the Coatz. Looking for something that contrasts the blue spangles.
How big do Lyonsi get? Ive read 10-12". Do they ever become available? Trimacs are my favorite but def not a community fish from my experience. Maybe their nicer cousin could work...

Salvini all the way. Prettiest fish I have and can hold their own. Careful if you get female though. My female sal and male convict seem to be paired up.

I just ordered 2 Rio Danlis this morning from Jeff. Along with 4 leucistic. This thread popped into my mind so I came on here to recommend. Funny coincidence

A Firemouth could definitely hold its own. If its the looks you don't like that is a different story but don't let the temperament fool you. I had one that was to aggressive for the tank so I put it with my larger peacocks and it dominated that tank.
