Alternative to gravel/sand?

Carpet plants look gorgeous too if you like the grass look and are up for a challenge. Dwarf hair grass carpets well

My favorite right now is sand brown spray paint on the underside then in the inside, driftwood and cool rocks.

Need a relatively high tech setup to get plants to carpet well but they will need a substrate of some sort. Some use organic potting soil called with ssandor a plant specific substrate. There are some kinds that are tougher than others. HC/baby tears is difficult while some others arent too difficult. It isnt for everyone though because it will be relatively expensive to setup at first and get right
