Always use a filter!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a betta in the same size tank without a filter (Shoebox_16 is a real life friend infact xD)
We were doing water changes every other day some times, fed them once a day, and cleaned gravel often - But the film kept returning.
Were both using filters now and have upgraded tank size to 8g and 10g. The film appears to have dissapeared now but who knows, perhaps it shall plague the tank again sometime in the future :p

Sorry guys, I have 1 gallon betta bowl, no heater, no filter, no problems. He is cool. 40% water change every week or so, he's a happy camper.

Yeah i know Guapote, you see little betta farms all over the place where they've a ton of betta's in jars and what not, no heaters or filters ofcourse, and they seem to be just fine. Perhaps the film was caused by having plants and other media in there, preventing all bacteria comming out with water changes.

same here, just dont overfeed. just a pinch of food a day will keep the nitrates away.

bought my mom a beta for xmas and a 3 gallon mini tank and it has a filter and the film still comes, its natural film from the beta just do a water change once every 3-5 days. i just use a small cup, skim it take about 20% out and then replace the water with zephrahills or bottled spring water.

weekly,
I dip a cup of water out, dip out the betta and put him in the cup...clean the tanks under running hot water and mild detergent...rinse well and fill with de-chlorinated room temp water...return fish and feed...Bettas been surviving this way for years in my house

I must have my DIY head on, I'm thinking of plastic cup canisters and all sorts:nilly: Go with what Zen said:)
