Am i cleaning my tank correctly?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You are definitely going to have to step up your filtration. For example:
I use a Rena XP3 & XP2 on my 70G tank. The rating on these tank are: XP3 - 175G tank & XP2 75G tank.Bio filtration is a must in every tank. This is media that stays in the tank and is generally not touched.

A lot of good info posted and I would agree that more established filtration is the key

I believe your having a mini-cycle, hence the ammonia spike. A 75% water change is way too much. Your essentially putting ALOT of stress on your bioload every time you do that so it has to recompensate with a little mini-cycle. If you like to do large water changes I think 40-50% is much better. I would also consider adding gravel as the beneficial bacteria like to live in the gravel and it would increase your bioload.

I agree with everyone else. You do need more filtration. You never can have too much filtration!

Hi, so i took your advice and bought myself a AC 110. Now in the LFS, the lady told me i should take the "foam filter insert" and "biomax insert" switch it around because she said so its easier to clean out the biomax or something. So the foam would be on the top and the biomax would be on the bottom instead. She said the direction is wrong on the box. Should i follower her advice or just stick to the direction on the box?

They also gave me a box of AC filter insert AMMONIA REMOVER, should i put this betwen the foam and carbon inserts?

leave the magic ammonia remover stuff on the shelf.. while the ammonia is bad for fish it is needed by the BB.. if you want to keep the old filter running go ahead it wont hurt anything.. however if you want to get rid of it take the media out and put it in your new ac110..
the sponge filter than comes with the ac110 is great.. as for the other stuff that comes with it i just dumped it in my tank (the lil tube things.. whatever they are).. its all just surface area.. surface are is where the BB live..
as for the carbon.. i personaly dont use it.. nothing against it i dont see a down side to it.. i just dont use it
i run a combo of pot scrubbers and filterfloss as well as the foam blocks.. same stuff i run in my sump..

Also, i used seachem prime as you suggested to remove the clorine/chloramine.
Should I still use stress coat and stress enzyme?

stick with the stress stuff for now..you can switch to prime later if you want.. its up to you..

Stick with what the box says you don't ever really need to clean the bio media. when it looks dirty all you do is full a small bucket up with AQUARIUM water then take the bio max bag out and swish it around in the bucket then place it back in. If you replace it your tank will need to do new full cycle and that's not good on the fish. And you won't need to clean the bag but maybe 4 time a year if that. but your foam block should be changed more often.

As for that tank cycle stuff I have tried my LFS brand of that and did not like it so I went back to the fish cycle. so it's but to you if you want to use it.
