Am I crazy for wanting an FX5 for my 100g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your crazy wanting a FX5 .

I run a few FX5s and so far I've been very pleased.

You figure those statistics are measured without media, so the flow isn't going to be as high as you think. I've found the best method with these filters is to just put the ceramic rings in the center chamber and just use the filter pads on the outside compartments.

I was running activated carbon in the center when I first got them and my tank looked like shibby because the filters were constantly shooting out really tiny bubles and it looked like a bb cloud...I was not happy. I just dumped the carbon and switched to rings and prefilters and I've been a happy man ever since.

sounds like a good idea, im a little lost on it tho. so you took out the media you put in the trays? switched to rings? what are these rings you speak of? thanks

if its not too much to ask can you snap some pictures to show us? Sounds like a good idea though.

I have an FX5 on my 125. I love it. I use the fine filter pads in the middle basket and the standard pads for the outer ring. Mine works great. I change the fine filter pad about every 3-4 weeks or whenever I see a drop in the water flow from the return pipe.
It keeps my water looking great.

i have an fx5 and a fluval 405 on a 90 gallon tank and they work great! id say go for it!

Yeah, I removed everything from the center cylindrical chambers (mainly carbon) and just left the foam pieces that wrap around the insert. The rings are called "Biomax"...I couldn't remember what they were called when I made that post earlier. So I basically ended up with 3 chambers of Biomax rings wraped with the Fluval foam inserts.

This is what they look like:
