It will be in a fenced yard in which I've never seen a living mammal other than my dogs.i didn't know the point of not feeding was so high but ill take your word for it.
Thanks everyone!

Birds can be trouble as well. I don't know what you have in your area but here there are egrets all over and they can eat a lot of small fish. I've found egrets standing at the edge of my pond a few times. Herons are even worse and I see them around sometimes but so far not in my yard.

There are ways to winter fish in ponds. If you are specifically worried about my PA winters, don't be, as a heater could easily be installed.

Heaters cost ALOT! Especially in PA... Trust me i wanted a tropucal pond down here in MD but the heater estimate for the winter was like 5-10k so do not rely on a heater...

Soil freeze depths in Pennsylvania are from 2 to 3.5 feet. A 100-200 gallon pond will be sitting against frozen ground unless you plan to dig out a much larger depth and install some type pf thermal insulation.

I don't have a clue how much wattage and kwh will be required to keep water above 50 degrees during a winter there. In addition, the air will be below zero and that will have to be blocked off for the most part with thick insulation.

If cost is no object, enough heaters and enough electricity might work.

Guys, I know where I live and I've never experienced a winter where the temp was below zero.
I don't need to keep it above 50, I need to keep it above 32.
ANYWAY:
I'm probably not doing a preform. Go big or go home is what I think the best mentality with a pond is. I'm gonna see if I could build a flexible liner pond around 2000 gallons for some (full size) koi.

Sorry, I was assuming that you lived in Pennsylvania. Since I grew up about 80 miles south of Pennsylvania, I was concerned.

But it's a good thing if you get a bigger pond that goes deeper enough to be below the frost line if in fact your state every goes below 32.

I do live in pa. Just southern pa and I've never experienced such a cold winter as you're describing in my 14 years.
There's a lowered area in my yard so if I raised some plywood walls id only need to dig 2 feet to have a 6 foot deep pond, hopefully growing some large koi with the depth for exercise.

6 feet will put most of the pond below the freezing line. That has to give you more options. Should be feasible to keep the lower half above 45 with reasonable heating even if it gets to zero (in one of those record years) and certainly if the average low is above 15.
