am i headed in the right direction?

If your tank is only 2weeks old I would guess its not cycled properly to support the amount of fish you have.
I also noticed on another thread of yours that you are using bay leaves as leaf litter.
Some ornamental Bay leaves are toxic and could be poisoning your fish.
To be on the safe side, remove the leaves and start doing daily 50% water changes.

I'm all for using leaves in aquariums but I would be careful which ones you add. Some leaves are toxic when ingested and could kill your fish.
Cattappa, banana, magnolia apple, hawthorn oak and beech are all tried and tested and safe.
Indian Bay leaves are said to be safe but unless you know what species of bay you have for sure, I would remove them.
My parents use them to make food, i believe they are good

I agree wit Stanzzzz7, at two weeks your tank is not cycled and the fish may be breathing hard because they are being poisoned by their own urine, and other waste.
Start doing those 50% per day water changes.
Most tanks aren't cycled until they are have least 6 to 8 weeks of benificial bacterial populations .
Don't add any more fish until then.
Bravo to the people at Big Al's for trying to keep your youthful rash, and potentially damaging impulses in check.

lol, i will, tho i mite have returned 2 pearl eartheaters to get a 6inch rapheal cat...

Now I'm not suggesting to get more fish since your tank is still so new but... Maybe ask them to hold it while your tank matures? I'm a sucker for raphael catfish...and senegal bichirs... and corys... bottom dwellers in general ;)
