If someone is on the side of the road starving... is it acceptable to buy them a big mac even though it is not an "ideal" meal? I would think so...

If you can offer it a better environment, even though it is not ideal... the fish will be better off...

I also agree with the above statement, as long as your ready to re-home the fish if it does indeed end up outgrowing your tank...

But at the same time you have to also think, if your buying this fish from a shop, do you really want to be supporting them by buying a fish that was living in a bad state? Coz at the end of the day, your supporting & agreeing with their keeping habits which ultimately will just lead to them ordering more large fish they can't exactly accommodate and will end up sick or dead...
