Youre 100% right, chemistry is not my thing...so I cant explain how it works. All that I know is that when adding additional filtration to my tanks in the past, it combatted every high nitrate problem I was having. I wrote it off as more area of BB helped combat the problem.

I will take your verbal spanking and use it as a reason to learn more about the process of the cycle in my tanks. :irked:

Maybe, I don't know. If you say it did, then it did... perhaps you were lucky and did something that made it possible for your filter to do the job.... I guess it can't be impossible. But for the rest of us it can be very complicated. I've tried everything to create a no water change system and so far haven't had any luck - aquatic plants died, sand bed was kinda starting to work and then I had to switch tanks, bamboo died, mint died, lol... next on my list is pothos ivy and an external sand bed in a 5 gal bucket. But common BB definitely don't remove nitrates, they create them.

And I'm sorry, wasn't trying to be rude or anything. just a friendly discussion.. :grinno:

Well if BB create nitrates, it had to be something else I did or going on in my tanks. I dont know. Thats why I said I will use this discussion as a reason to go learn more about the process because I honestly dont understand it enough (or at all apparently.)

No offense taken. Ive been pissy all day so I had it coming...:nilly:

Thanks for all the info i put the two FH in a 50 gallon and put my convict in the 90 with the oscar and red devil im also going to pick up a canister filter soon

I think you should probably solo out the red devil in the 50, and keep the flowerhorns in the 90, that RD is gonna reak havok!

good idea i like the look of the red devil in the 90 but if any agression is shown ill put the FHs in the 90 and solo the red devil

Wow.. complete thread derail and then recovery..

Do you have photos of the tanks? Besides the fish what else is in them to hide in?

Yes, definitely overstocked as it was. Sounds like you've thinned the stocking though. Just keep an eye on aggression levels.

You guys talking about high nitrates - have you ever considered that nitrates can be present in tap water? At least in the UK anyway. Not sure on the exact amount, but certainly a lot of hard water areas have nitrates naturally present in tap water, so when you do the water changes you are in effect putting some back. But fish thrive and are healthy in this sort of water, so it isn't a huge concern. As someone else said it's not as if they're keeping softy discus.

I'd say over stocked yes, but you can typically find another 75 or 90 for cheap. the you would just split up the stock.

If you do want to keep all of them together aim for a 180 min.

i have tthe tank on a standard 90 gal steel stand what size tank could i fit under it?
