I currently have a 55 gallon with an XP3 and Penguin 200. The fish are 12 Demasoni, 7 yellow labs, 4 Acei, 1 male German Red Peacock, 2 bristlenose plecos, and 4 syno Petricola. Is this too much? I have a lot of Holey Rock in there and the aggression is not that bad. Everyone is about 2" or larger. Should I get rid of some? I like them all but don't want to have issues later.

Keep the demasoni and the labs. This is a classic 55 gallon setup and looks great. The two groups will setup hierarchies and mostly ignore each other. You should be able to observe some nice breeding behavior as the demasonis are mean, but small and the labs are larger, but more timid.

I would stick with these two groups of fish and maybe one of the plecos for algae control. Put the Aceis and the Ruby red in another tank. Get rid of the cats or move to another tank as well.

Enjoy. :)

:cheers:Go get another tank or two and another wife! I did and it' better than ever!!!!

Just kidding. Just because it worked out great for me, doesn't mean it will for everyone.
My new wife:drool: said today that we had at least one tank in every room except the kitchen and bath. So she said, "lets get a tank for the kitchen and we will start planing for the bath".:OMG: God I LOVE HER!!!:headbang2
Best of luck, Jay:mwave:

(9 tanks, 1 Wife) LOL!

When my wife started to make noises, I changed tactics.
I started putting breeding pairs in all the tanks, and the babies are so cute!!
OH MY GOD!

With the demasoni, I have to keep 12 or more due to conspecific aggression. I was thinking that I might replace the 12 with 4 Psuedotropheus Blue Dolphin (Giant Demasoni) since they look the same, are slightly bigger, and don't have the same conspecific aggression as the regular demasoni.

Will this work since getting another tank is out of the question? Anyone here ever keep them?

Metriaclima sp. Ndonga is the Giant Demasoni @ 7", Cyrtocara Moorii is the Dolphin @ a Robust 9" - Psuedotropheus Demasoni get 4" Midnight Demasoni - 3". You just be trading in tangerines for oranges or grapefruit.

well the demasonis do better as a large group-i wouldnt split them up. if i were you, id get rid of some of the bottom dwellers-you have too many. i would stick with the 2 bristlenoses (i think they do a better job eating algae and food that lands on the bottom) and get rid of the petris.

if you are talking about moorri (they are called dolphins) they would get too big for that tank imo.. i love the look of demasonis and yellow labs --or saulosis...

Sorry for the confusion . . . The Giant Demasoni I was talking about are Metriaclima sp. "dolphin" (Ndonga) which was formerly listed as Pseudotropheus sp. "Blue Dolphin". I think I'm just going to remove the 4 petricola to reduce bioload.

The other reason I mentioned Giant Demasoni is that they are supposed to be less aggressive than the regular Demasoni. My 12 demasoni have now become 11 and one of those 11 is in a hospital tank (nipped fins). I originally had 16 about 3 months ago. I think I ended up with too many males with my purchase. I may have to try venting them and getting more females. If this doesn't work, I may have to go with other fish besides demasoni.
