Am I ready for Plecos???????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sweeeeeeeet gt welcome

i'd aim for a 24" wide tank by 72 long and 24 high at elast for that cat. ideally a 8x2.5x2.5 would be best but 375's are hard to come by, and expensive.

get a rubbermaid stock tank for the cat and keep it in the garage , with a heater, and large enough filter he will be happy until he dies of old age.

if water parms are on target ...I wouldn't worry for awhile ...Giraffe cats likes Nigers don't move around much...However make sure your filteration is capable of handling his waste along with additional plecos...all are waste machines and push bio loads and water changes to the max..GL:popcorn:

P.S. not everyone on MFK can have a river in their backyard to house monster fish. People tend to visualize human emotions, needs with animals wants and needs.....clean water and food everyday that's better than they get in the wild.

I think without the cat you'd have room for the Plecs you want also. As far as pH? Leave it, it's fine. My water is super hard-7 times harder than yours-and my Plecs do great. They love me, love food, love their water and their tank :-)

Here is my filter, the Rio 2500 pump should be hitting between 650-700 GPH The media space is 4" wide 15" deep and 48" long

Where did you get that filter? What brand or is it custom?

Looks like a great bio filter, may want to think about adding a canister filter for mechinal filterarion.....FX5's on Ebay are a great deal.

All the white and light green are floss type media (about 6" thick total) so that sifts the particles out before it hits the bio-balls I ran out of the white stuff that's why you see the black bio balls. This floss type stuff is almost like a Scotch Brite pad it's for pond filters.

It's divided into 3 sections my thoughts were to experiment with different layers. I have some finer floss that I plan to stick in next time I pull it out. The whole filter slides behind my tank against the wall,,, basically you can only see it from the sides and it is VERY quiet.

So far the water looks very good and my tests look decent too other than the PH and I'll check that maybe tomorrow again.

Yes it's a custom, my first time seriously working with acrylic and it didn't go too bad,
I did learn some things along the way,,, first is even if you think you have enough clamps you don't.

My last filter was a stack of Rubbermaid tubs with holes in the bottom each tub had a different layer and they fit snug in top of a 10 gallon tank for a sump. They stuck over the top about a foot but they fit in each other so it couldn't leak worked great for about 10 yrs so well in fact I really never had to clean it. If you are properly oversized things should maintain themselves.
