am i the only one who feels like my nitrates will never be low?

You have 100ppm of nitrates from the tap? Jeeze. I wouldn't be drinking tap water then. The Safe Water Drinking Act of 1974 had the EPA set an upper limit on nitrates maximum contaminant level goals (MCLG) of 10 mg/L or 10 ppm.

I'd try a different nitrate test kit because 100ppm out of the tap would be a human health issue.
 
I got 0 nitrates out the tap my waters pretty clean besides the chlorine and watnot that's probly in it. but I don't even smell chlorine in it tbh

I use a API test kit and have been using them for years and yes that is what it says and I have tested it a few times... It is always like 100 to 120 ppm straight out of the tap!!!!
 
Maybe the test went bad? I've had them do that on occasion.
 
Somthing's not right, 100-120ppm out of the tap the fish are the least of your worries. Can you take some water to a LFS and have them test it just be on the safe side? You can also call your local water co. or the township and ask.

I have never thought about having a lfs test it for me.. thanks Tom I will try that and see what they say!!!!
 
If you live in City of Toledo, here's your 2012 drinking water quality report:

The measured nitrates from the tap were 2.45 ppm.

I'd start with cleaning your canister filters. Something tells me that they're really, really dirty...

A nitrate level of 100 ppm in the tap water is hazardous to people, specially babies. High nitrate levels can cause blue baby sysmdrom. High nitrate levels in formula milk is suceptable to reduction to nitrite in babies' blood impacting hemoglobin functioning, the same way fish will die from nitrite poisoning. Some agricultural areas have nitrate pollution in groundwater from fertilizer uses.

This. My 135 mbuna tank which had 5 canisters running would typically have around 50 ppm after a water change....till I cleaned the cans. Nitrates would be back down between 10-20 afterwards.
