I picked up a jewel cichlid about two weeks ago. I have no idea how old it is, but it's just bow starting to color up.

Any idea if it's a male or female? Or is there some growing to do still?

A little too blue to be female...but let it color up more...

Also it is from Africa.

Lol, goes to show how long it's been since I've had cichlids. I saw the body shape and instantly thought Sa/Ca.
Thanks for the heads up, now if only a mod could move this to the proper section. Thank you.

It will get super aggressive! What fish you got it with? Mine tear EVERY fish they are put with to peices. Including many other cichlids.

+1
I've never had one but have looked into them before and they are supposed to be VERT aggressive and will kill most other fish. I hope you don't have it in that tank for life either since I saw an angelfish in the picture and the angel will more than likely be slaughtered when the jewel is big enough.

When I looked into them I read that they were a hit and miss in aggression. That the ones that would be very aggressive show it at an early stage.

If that's not the case, I will be looking for another tank in the near future.

Yep, this is an absolute certainty. For the OP: despite the fact that these are an African species, in my experience, they actually do a lot better with SA/CA cichlids than they do with other Africans. I've kept Jewels with Convicts, Jack Dempsey's, and Firemouths; was a perfect a setup.

Go on youtube. Look up jewel cichlid vs Texas cichlid. The little jewel outcompetes a massive texas for territory. that angelfish in thr back will be torn to shreds! My jewels have killed a juvi oscar, acei cichlids, yellow labs, juvi jack dempsey tons of rainbowfish etc. mine also take feeder fish once a week and the moment it hits the water BOOM! Silver scales everywhere! Mine bites my hand everytime i put it in the tank... And they can become quite the glass bangers! (Especially when breeding!) these are true mini monsters!
