Convicts if gender appropriate are small and tough. Many keep them as dithers to large CA species because they can can take a hefty whoopin and be fine and their small size makes it so they can escape and hide easily into rock piles.

What would define gender appropriate? Sorry if it's a silly question.

Depending on the gender of your EBJD You usually want same gender with the convicts to prevent pairing. All males or all females, that being said I had a few female convicts in with a large male firemouth for months and no pairing activity took place so opposite isnt always so bad.
