Whats happening? Almost everytime I have an african cichlid on my "wishlist" and I go to the LFS with "no intention" to buy ANYTHING, I end up finding the fish I wanted... hmmmm I am definitely not complaining, but wondering if this happens to anyone else? :D So just wondering if anyone has had this experience, feel free to post pics of your "amazing finds"...

The best find I think I ever ended up with was my American Dat. Just by sheer luck and timing I got it at the local Petland Discounts. The day before, I'd bought one off eBay and the seller informed me the tank crashed and his stock died, refunded the money. I walk into Petland the next day and since I'd know what the species looked like, as soon as I saw it, I was like, I'll be! Came home with me that same day.

Same store, about a year later, walked in and someone had dropped off a nice half grown Nimbochromis Polystigma. Bad luck here though, after acclimating it, the next day, the Venustus got too playful, spooked it and rammed it's head on the hood and killed itself on the spot. Still, was a nice find.

So...What have you found????

All the LFS's close to me are really hurting for business....and their stock levels are very depressed.

As to getting "lucky"...it only happened once....ducked into a LTF store a long distance from my house on a lark as I was volunteering my time helping a friend move. I looked around and he had two beautiful Victorians in a tank by themselves. This was years ago and I wasn't sure what species they were.....he said they were trade ins? This was mid afternoon.....finding a Victorian back then was like winning the lottery, at least for me. I think he wanted $15 each for them.....a relative bargain, even for 15yrs ago. Long story short.....I was back the next morning waiting for them to open.....only to rush in and find them gone. The owner was surprised that they sold, he had them for months....not even a nibble. The owner apologized to me as he knew I wanted them but didn't bother to work out a deal to hold them as they would surely be there the following morning. Can you say...."Sad Life"?

Lesson learned....

I actually found Kyoga Flamebacks in an LFS...Talk about a RARE find.

Well, I haven't bought it yet, but I have fallen in love. It's a A. Calvus "Zebra." My husband is going to reseal a tank for this particular fish. Hoping to get a few next week or so!

I have an awesome store close by, so I see incredible fish all the time. All cichlids, all the time!

Exactly..She's trying to be all kosher....;)

well, if Dave's isn't enough (and I love Dave's) Up the road in Austin are 2 places that have some pretty fantastic stock as well. Amazonia and River City Aquatics. Between the 3, there is a pretty amazing cross section. Then down the road closer to me is Goliad fish farm. They don't sell direct, but I can order through the local fish stores, which do not stock anything I want.
