I have a large amazonium aquarium with a few larger fish. I was at the zoo the other day and saw that they had turtles in their amazonian tank. They seemed to be mainly aquatic and had limited above water surfaces to get out on. Are there any turtles that are mainly aquatic and would be alright in a large aquarium tank with limited above water surfaces?

First of and here we go again, dont mix turtles with fish that are really inportant for you because they will often get killled;) Second as for amazonic turtles that fit the above you have the matamata Chelus fimbriatus, fowever this guys dont like the company of large fish as they stress out and like a more peacefull life stile, they need shalow very clean water with lots of hidding places and they simply cant compete for food with fish. In my opinion they are enough hard to keep alive and well by themselfes(matas are also among the most delicate and hard to keep for long term turtles that are readly avaible). That being puted apart you have a few others that do need their basking place but are much hardier. But also one of the most important things to remenbar is that most get HUGE. Most Podocnemis sp, Hydromedusa sp and Phrynops sp need very large aquariums in order to trive and both the first and the last genus have species that can get bigger then 40cm wich is quite a bulk to put in one aquarium plus fish.

What about non-amazonian turtles that would be alright?

Also the fish are all over 14 inches and growing. Will turtles bother with fish that big?

You could try big mostly herbivorus turtles like cooters Pseudemys sp but they all need a good basking area and can still take bites of your fish! Can also get quite large if they are females;)

turtles eat fish. size of the turtle or fish does not matter. dont mix the two.

Yes and no. I keep fish with turtles and haven't had a loss yet. A lot of it depends on the size of the enclosure, the species of turtle and how well it's fed.

How would a Hydromedusa tectifera (snakes neck)do?
For starters it needs a lower temp then the one you have for your fish! And second, it is easier to keep then matas but still a challenging turtle;)
